So – should poker also be banned from the olympics? no…it shouldn’t and here is why – 8 reasons why poker IS a sport and should not be on the list of forbidden olympic sports:
According to “The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language,” the definitions of sport are:
1.) An active pastime; diversion; recreation.
2.) A specific diversion, usually involving physical exercise and having a set form and body of rules; a game.
As you can see, poker involves all of the above. I know, I know, physical exercise in poker? what? moving the chips to the center of the table? sure..that counts, but that is not the only physical movement that one exercises while playing poker because..if we look at physical exercise and what it means we see it encompasses the following:
3.) Strength – the mental endurance that a poker player must practice in order to stay focused the entire game
4.) Speed – The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language
5.) Coordination – the act of reading faces and following the rules of the game require high skill
6.) Reflexes – knowing when to fold – timeliness is key
7.) Physical endurance- the cards may get heavy
8.) Ability to play through pain – cuz losin money hurts like a bitch!
so, the next time you want to say that poker is not a sport or that it should be a forbidden Olympic sport – think again!
